Veterinary Diagnostics InstituteTM (VDxI)
is a specialty veterinary reference laboratory focused on providing veterinarians with specialty, esoteric diagnostic tests.
Canine and Feline CardioCare are lab-based services for the measurement of the feline and canine specific cardiac peptide N-terminal
pro B-type naturetic peptide (NT-proBNP). All testing is performed in the VDxI main reference laboratory in Irvine, CA. VDxI laboratory
services are offered only through licensed veterinarians. Pet owners can have your cat or dog tested for NT-proBNP through a licensed veterinarian. Identical to other diagnostic modalities such as EKG and radiographs currently used to identify heart disease
and heart failure in animals, CardioCare testing should only be used in conjunction with a veterinary examination and other available
diagnostic aids.
NT-proBNP is secreted from the cardiac ventricle. Elevated levels of NT-proBNP are seen in cats and dogs with underlying heart disease.
Published studies have demonstrated that BNP may be elevated even before the animal begins to demonstrate signs of cardiac disease.
The following clinical decision algorithm is intended as a guide for both outlining the clinical utility of NT-proBNP and summarizing
the interpretation of NT-proBNP results.
